Choosing the Right Oil for Your Engine
Oil keeps your engine alive. Wrong oil = expensive repairs. Here's how to choose correctly.
Viscosity (0W-20, 5W-30, etc.)
The first number (0W, 5W) is cold-weather flow. The second (20, 30) is hot engine protection. Lower first number = better cold starts. Higher second number = better high-temp protection. Always use what your manual specifies.
Synthetic vs Conventional
Synthetic: Better extreme temp performance, longer life, higher cost. Required in many modern engines (turbos, high-performance).
Conventional: Cheaper, fine for older engines with regular changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles).
Synthetic Blend: Middle ground.
Don't Mix Weights
Topping off 5W-30 with 10W-40 messes with viscosity. Stick to one weight. If you're low on oil and need a top-up, use the same weight and type.
High-Mileage Oils
Got 75,000+ miles? High-mileage oil has additives to reduce leaks and burn. Worth it if your engine is aging.
