How to Check Your Vehicle's Towing Capacity
Towing capacity isn't just a number in your owner's manual. It's a safety limit you absolutely can't ignore. Here's how to find it and use it correctly.
Where to Find It
1. Owner's manual (Towing section)
2. Driver's door jamb sticker (GVWR and payload)
3. Manufacturer website (by VIN)
4. TowCapacity411.com (quick lookup)
What Affects Towing Capacity
Engine size, transmission, axle ratio, and drivetrain all play a role. A V8 F-150 tows more than a V6. 4WD trucks tow less than 2WD (extra weight). Check your exact trim.
Don't Forget Tongue Weight
The trailer hitch should carry 10-15% of the trailer's total weight. Too little = trailer sway. Too much = rear suspension sag. Use a tongue weight scale.
Real-World Math
Max towing capacity - (passengers + cargo + tongue weight) = safe towing capacity. Don't max it out. Leave 10-20% buffer for hills and braking.
